A package of chemicals that infects a living cell. A virus consists of a length of nucleic acid surrounded by a protein coat. Viruses are far smaller than cells. They are not usually classified as living organisms as they cannot grow and reproduce on their own. Instead, a virus relies on a living host cell to help it make copies of itself. (DK)
